I have an endless fascination with cities and their buildings, particularly old industrial giants and their place in the modern world. Every style of architecture sits alongside another and all serve to show layer upon layer of history, where style and functionality combine to change monstrosities into beauty.
It is at night when I find the scale of city skylines even more powerful and intimidating, when the details of the building are lost and lights create a new skyline.
My paintings reflect the awe, energy and chaos of wandering through city streets and looking up.
For me, domestic interiors serve as a portrait of the person who lives there. Through their objects, decor and room composition, it is possible to build up a picture of them without ever seeing their face.
This series of interiors challenged me to consider places from my own past, places of which there are no photos to refer to, or Google searches that will find them. They are moments in time, recollections of people I’ve known and the feeling of nostalgia it evokes to revisit their surroundings.
Through my paintings I hope to challenge the viewer to use memory to recall scenes of domesticity from their own pasts; to see how clear a memory can be, and how powerful interiors can be in understanding others.
My collection of seascapes and landscapes (other than commissions) are usually based on a sketch en plein air. I work in acrylics, often using a palette knife to capture rough seas.
My series of lidos is my homage to Hockney, but referencing the many wonderful lidos of South London.
Growing up in rural Lincolnshire meant I often took the skies around me for granted. It is only since living in towns and cities that I look back and reflect on the landscape that was so familiar to me, and the incredible light and colours of a Lincolnshire sunset.
In my abstract paintings I am drawn to geometric shapes and impressions created through minimal information.
One offs, commissions and experimental pieces.
Whenever I travel I take a small sketchbook and watercolours with me, to capture the sights and sounds of my journeys. This personal collection of sketches is used for preparatory work, or simply for enjoyment to create a record of experiences.
Learning different styles and techniques to create art is something that will always take you our of your comfort zone as an artist but is hugely valuable.
This collection of work ranges from lino printing, to wall murals, cartoons and collage.
Seeing art in context helps to create a sense of how it relates to it’s environment. My work is displayed in a wide variety of settings; from galleries, to office spaces and homes.
